Every area of expertise has it’s own language and terms, photo restoration is no exception. Hardly meant for conversation over a candlelight dinner it is still the communications language of the manipulators of those tiny pixels. Here are some very brief explanations so you can follow our language. Pixels – Considered as the smallest element of an image. Pixels in some instances are interpreted or refereed to as pel, sample, bytes, bits, dots etc. Resolution – When referred to in scanning it is the number of dots per inch (DPI) that your scanner produces when doing a reproduction of your image. The higher the resolution, the more pixels per inch providing a more distinct image while the lower the resolution provides lesser detail and distinction. If the original image is small and desired to be enlarged as the finished product you would want to scan in the range of 300 to 600 dpi. Nearly all scanner have high resolution available over 600 but for restoration purposes scans above 600dpi
