What do we know about public opinion on gun control and related youth violence issues?
As one might expect, there is a lot of information available to help describe how the “public” feels about gun control. In recent years, as more instances of youth violence have become publicized through the media, more has been done to collect data about public opinion regarding youth violence. Therefore, there is no lack of information regarding these interwoven issues. A summary of nationwide polls based on research conducted by the author reveals that most U.S. citizens: are in favor of stricter gun control (61 to 68 percent).[1] list the “availability of guns” as a major contributor to instances of youth violence (60 percent).[2] favor the registration of all handguns (74 to 79 percent).[3] favor the banning of assault weapons (approximately 68 percent).[4] favor raising the legal age for handgun ownership (82 percent).[5] favor a ban on mail order and internet gun sales (66 percent).[6] think is more important to control guns than to protect the Second Amendment rights of America
