What does 14k gold-filled mean?
Gold-filled describes when a layer of 14kt gold is mechanically bonded with heat and pressure to one or more surfaces of the supporting base metal, then rolled or drawn to a given thickness. In the jewelry industry the quantity of gold must be at least 1/20th by weight of the total product. 14kt gold-filled is not the same as gold-plated because the gold color will not rub off. A gold-plated object eventually loses the gold color because it is merely dipped in gold whereas a 14kt gold-filled object is partially constructed of 14kt gold.
