What does a sports physiotherapist do?
A registered physiotherapist assesses, plans, and undertakes treatment of patients who present with injuries of the musculoskeletal (muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons), neurological (nervous system), or cardiorespiratory (heart and lung) systems. Physiotherapists who work in a sports medicine clinic, such as WSM, focus primarily on musculoskeletal injuries. Physiotherapists use a number of treatment techniques. These include mobilization/manipulation, stretching, acupuncture, electrotherapeutic modalities, and most importantly, therapeutic and activity-specific exercises. The exercises will be specific to the proper biomechanics necessary for safe and effective participation in sports and other activity-based exercise (i.e. dance). A sports physiotherapist often is, or has been, involved in sports and can relate to the physical and psychological limitations imposed by an injury.
