If an air conditioner is working properly it is just a heat exchanger, and emits nothing but hot and cold air. The problem is the freon gas used inside. Older car and home units used types of freon that were very harmful to the ozone layer if released into the atmosphere. These gases are now illegal and have been replaced with more environmentally friendly gases.
