Most technicians attend a specialized training program in which they learn about heating, cooling, and air circulation, with the intent of becoming certified as technicians. These programs also include education in basic safety, managing fuel systems, and dealing with refrigerants. Many programs also offer training in environmental sustainability and recycling so that HVAC technicians can offer green services to clients who request them. After 10 years or more of experience, an HVAC technician will make around $20/hour on average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
