Ian Boddy: Nothing! In English a “din” is a loud, harsh noise so it was slightly tongue in cheek. But I wanted the name of the label to be very short and easy to say with 3 letters so that the catalogue number could include the label name. This was all part of achieving an identity for the label that was fresh and modern. Planet Origo: Has the label specialized in any particular kind of electronic music? Ian Boddy: Well that’s difficult to pin down but it has generally inhabited the realms of ambient electronica. Having said that albums like Strange Geographie by Protogonos (DiN3) and Yolo by Tetsu Inoue (DiN22) are beatless and amorphous whereas titles such as Autonomic by Dub Atomica (DiN4) and In Vitro Tide by Surface 10 (DiN8) verge on having dance beats on them. There’s also many references to the older, more traditional forms of electronic music – often lumped together as Berlin School with the likes of the various ARC albums and some of my own material. Deutsches Institut für Normung. It is the standard size for car audio receivers. International standard ISO 7736 defines a standard size for car audio head units. The standard was originally established by the German standards body Deutsches Institut für Normung as DIN 75490, and is therefore commonly referred to as the “DIN car radio size”. It was adopted as an international standard in 1984. Head units generally come in either single DIN (180 x 50 mm panel) or double DIN (180 x 100 mm panel) size. The depth is not standardized.
