What Does God Say About Drama and Theatrical Performances?
The profession of acting did not originate with the Hebrews and it is not a part of the divine pattern. Drama has come down to us from Greece and it was originally a part of the worship of the goddess Dionysus and was carried on with drunken rivalry. Yet today we live in a visual society where seeing is believing. Most people are no longer satisfied with word-images; people now want to see pictures. The result is that we are saturated by images in the market place, in schools, in the workplace, at home, and increasingly in churches. So called church growth experts tell us that preaching is old-fashioned and no longer appeals to Generation Y (born in the 1980’s) or Generation X (born between 1964-1982). To reach these new generations, Bible based worship must be replaced with the more effective sensual based worship such as drama, plays, dancing, movies, and rock bands.
