What Does Having a Lung or Heart/Lung Transplant Involve?
The process of lung or heart/lung transplantation can be broken down into six phases. Phase 1: Clinical assessment Your first visit will be to the Outpatient Transplant Clinic at the University of Alberta Hospital. You may be seen during an inpatient hospital stay. This visit will give you more detailed information about lung transplantation and answer the following questions: • Do you wish to have a lung or heart/lung transplant? • Is lung or heart/lung transplantation the best option for your condition? • Is lung or heart/lung transplant surgery a suitable option for you? • How urgent is your need for transplantation? You will meet the pulmonary specialists at this time. Please bring your questions and concerns. If a transplant assessment is felt to be appropriate at this time, you will move on to Phase 2.
