Have rich parents. Start karting around the age of 4. Win everything in sight. Move up to single seaters as soon as you are over the age limit (16-18 depending on where you are). Win everything in sight. Get into either one of the top F3 series or even GP2. Now things get more complicated. If you are Indian, Chinese, Japanese, American or from somewhere with lots of money and no racing history, then all you have to do is keep your car on the track most of the time and attract some national sponsors…some small team at the back of the F1 grid will quickly take you on because of your sponsors and marketing potential. If you are based in Europe, you have to win races and preferrably championships and hope that in the year you win there aren’t too many former winners and ex-GP drivers waiting for an F1 seat to become available.
