What does Minimal Quantity Lubrication mean?
Generally speaking, minimal quantity lubrication (MQL) is the supply of very small quantities of lubricant to friction points. The equipment used can be metering units, micro-pumps (injection oilers), oil and air units, etc. However, the term has acquired a specific meaning in the context of metal machining, namely the replacement of flood lubrication with a cooling lubricant-emulsion consisting of a low (minimal) quantity of non-water soluble oils, oil mist and/or aerosols.
