Philosophers and educators have been struggling over this for literally thousands of years. Up until the last century, society tied morality to religion. God created a universe that “cares” how we behave. We are in harmony (good relationship with) God and the universe if we are kind, honest, etc. God was the authority that backs up our knowledge of right and wrong. The Golden Rule (look it up) was the way to make moral decisions and God was the Creator of the universe that works in accordance with the Golden Rule. In the last century, some schools have tried to “teach” moral education without reference to religion. This morality is not based upon God but is rather based upon feelings. Being honest makes us feel good and being dishonest makes us feel bad. So godless moral education tries to emphasize feelings.
