What does “Self Cleaning” mean when used to describe a Speakman showerhead?
The “self cleaning” noted on the SPEAKMAN package is not meant to imply that there is never a need to clean your showerhead. The most common cleaning concern with showerheads is the buildup of calcium in and on the showerhead. This buildup varies greatly based on the mineral content of the water going through the showerhead. Our “self cleaning” refers to the calcium wiping and removal accomplished by SPEAKMAN showerheads as the spray adjusting handle is cycled through its adjusting positions and the plungers wipe across the faceplate. Under more normal circumstances, this is enough to keep the showerhead clean. In conditions of higher mineral content water, the wiping action is not sufficient to remove all of the calcium buildup in the showerhead. In this case, it is necessary to soak the showerhead in a vinegar and water solution to dissolve, soften and remove the calcium, cleaning the showerhead.
