What does Thanksgiving mean?

Tom Stevens

The first Thanksgiving in America was celebrated in 1621 to celebrate the harvest of the Plymouth Colony after a hard winter. Governor William Bradford announced that it was a day of thanksgiving. The colonists invited the Wampanoag Indians to their English harvest feast.

Thanksgiving was celebrated throughout the colonies after the fall harvests. George Washington declared it a national holiday in 1789.

Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Thanksgiving the third Thursday in November in 1939, and Congress moved it to the fourth Thursday in November in 1941.

You celebrate Thanksgiving by having a delicious feast to celebrate that harvest and give thanks for everything you are thankful for.

To answer the question as to what is thanks giving! Yes the pilgrims celebrated the first Thanks Giving. But no one mentioned who they where giving thanks to! As most pilgrims were quakers and quaker being a God Fearing Christ believing Christian Faith. They were thanking God for his bountiful blessings in providing them with a safe crossing and a great harvest and for the sacrifice his son Jesus Christ made on the cross so that we all can find salvation in his holy Name!

Today we relate Thanks Giving to Turkey Dinner and many things that draw us away from the true meaning of Thank’s Giving!. Like all our sacred Traditions that have been eroded over the past year’s. It is high time that man kind got back to our roots as the time is soon coming when it will be too late to give Thanks to the one who is worthy of our Thanks and Worship!
