What does the Christmas tree represents and the ornaments in brazil?
The Christmas tree originated in central/northern Europe during the Middle Ages and was originally decorated with fruit and nuts. It is thought originally to have represented the tree in the Garden of Eden – Christmas Eve used to be celebrated as the feast of Adam and Eve, that’s why it had fruit on it. It formed the backdrop to a play which traced bible history from Adam and Eve to the birth of Christ, the new Adam. The fruit and nuts were then given to children. The plays were suppressed during the Protestant reformation but towns guilds kept the tree custom going. Later, people added candles (later still lights) to the trees, replaced the fruit with glass baubles and the nuts with sweets and the like. Most people have forgotten about Adam and Eve and the tree now simply represents Christmas. Christians may now think of the lights as representing the light of Christ and the decorations his gifts to us, but that’s quite a modern idea.
