What does the crescent moon and palm tree mean on the Univ. South Carolina football field?
The crescent and palm are on the South Carolina state flag. The palm tree is a symbol of South Carolina’s success in defending the fort, built from palmetto trees, on Sullivan’s Island during the Revolutionary War. The crescent was on the caps of the revolutionary war soldiers from South Carolina. There are conflicting stories on why the crescent was on their hats but the one I like is that it represented the 2nd child. In England the 1st child had the rights to the family land so many colonists were 2nd and 3rd children that came to America so they could have land of their own. It reminds me of the symbol of the German Afrika Korps from WWII. I just hope that Spurrier doesn’t start calling himself the Palmetto Fox.
