What does the cross on hot X buns stand for?
As a Wiccan, and a thorough researcher of such matters, I believe that the cross on hot cross buns actually predates Christianity, contrary to popular belief. In ancient times, cakes were baked to honour deities. The Saxons, at some point in time, began to mark buns with a cross in honour of the goddess Eostre (the Pagan origin of the Christian celebration of Easter). This cross symbolised the four quarters of the moon, as the moon was worshipped.
