What does the Disabled wait state message issued during IPL mean?
There may be several reasons the Hercules’ emulated CPU could enter a disabled wait state during IPL, but most of the times the error condition will be found to be some component required for IPL is missing or incompatible. This is one of the most frequently posted questions on the discussion groups and I probably should have added an entry here earlier. Nevertheless, better late than none at all. Since there may be several reasons to receive a disabled wait state, I will add to this answer as different causes are encountered. For each reason, I will reproduce the message(s) issued, then explain the cause and resolution.
