The way local services for children and young people are inspected is set to change. The good news is that the amount of paperwork involved, as well as overlaps between joint area review (JAR) and annual performance assessment (APA), will be reduced. For example, we no longer ask local authorities and the partner organisations they work with to complete a self-assessment and return it to Ofsted. Instead, we will use their latest Children and Young People’s Plan and any subsequent reviews that have been carried out. JAR inspectors will consider how effective the local area’s self evaluation processes are when they undertake their inspections. Social care data is no longer collected from local authorities; instead it is collected primarily by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and the DfES Standard Site’s Information Centre.
