What Does The Term Relative Humidity Mean?
(RH) Weather channels usually mention the relative humidity highs and lows for each day. Humidity is the amount of water or moisture in the air. When we refer to the Relative Humidity, we are referring to the amount of water vapor present in the air compared to the greatest amount of water vapor the air can hold at that temperature. The optimal RH level in a building is generally considered to be between 35% and 50%. Any higher levels could promote bacteria growth. Many feel the ideal RH should be 45-55% . If the RH is in the 30% range, the membranes in the respiratory system can dry out, become inflamed and cause infections. In office buildings, the moisture or humidity levels can be controlled automatically but in the home, the subject often requires more attention. When the temperature is high and the RH is low, evaporation of water is much faster; soil dries, wet clothes on a clothesline dry quickly, perspiration on the skin dries rapidly.
