What will I experience during this exam? How will I be notified about the results of my thoracentesis ultrasound procedure? What is a Thoracentesis Ultrasound procedure? This is a procedure used to remove fluid from the pleural space (the area around the lungs). How should I prepare for the Thoracentesis Ultrasound procedure? There is no special preparation for this exam. What does the Thoracentesis Ultrasound equipment look like? The equipment consists of a transducer, a monitor and a cart that contains the electronics used to process the returning echos. What will I experience during this exam? You will be asked to lie on the procedure table in a position that will best enable the physician to remove the fluid. Warm gel will be applied to your abdomen adjacent to the location chosen by the physician for needle placement. The ultrasound signal/image will guide the physician so that the needle placement is in the area of the fluid. You will not experience much discomfort with this proc
