Here are a few ideas on what to do about snow. In Austin it is totally not an issue. It snows here about once every two or three years. One thought is to run the electric power lines through the very middle of the track to clean up the visual mess of drooping wires that we have come to turn a blind eye to. In putting the power lines down the middle there is a certain amount of electromagnetic inefficiency in doing that. This inefficiency would result in some amount of heat being “wasted” in warming the track. The biggest reason why power companies don’t want to burry the power cables is this energy loss into the surrounding ground or, in our case, the track as compared to air.
