The California Trail exhibit has been designed to minimize the impact on neighbors and guests to Knowland Park. Pursuant to a 1998 Memorandum of Understanding between Knowland Park neighborhood associations and the Zoo, the Zoo incorporated community input into its 1998 master plan approval. This input resulted in the Zoo, amongst other things, moving the fence and animal exhibits away from neighborhood homes, managing parking and traffic flows, and developing animal safety and security protocols. As the design and planning for the California Trail exhibit continued in 2008-2010, the Zoo is proposing additional measures to minimize or eliminate the visual, aesthetic, noise and other potential impacts on neighbors. These measures include an all electric and quiet gondola transportation system, instead of an shuttle-bus and loop road; relocating the California Interpretive Center further away from resident homes and nestled into the hillside; and providing a walking path outside the sout
