What efforts have been made to restore giant panda populations?
• Establish nature reserves to protect the giant panda’s natural habitat. • Pass laws to make the protection of giant pandas compulsory. • Enforce natural forest protection and ‘grain to green’ projects to protect and expand the habitats of giant pandas. • Create corridors for the fragmented small populations to migrate freely so that a larger group for breeding can be formed, thus creating conditions for gene exchanges and preventing the loss of genetic diversity. • Conduct ex-situ (in captivity) protection and multi-disciplinary research. • Conduct trials and research to release captive giant pandas back to natural environment.
