What essential oils help with migraines and/or tension headaches?

Lavender oil works well for migraine headaches. You can use it by inhalling the oil, adding a few drops to hot water and smelling the steam or applying it topically. Lavender oil is not edible.

Peppermint oil can work as well as it can help with poor blood flow that is often a cause of migraine headaches.

Basil oil might work as well as it acts as a muscle relaxant.

If none of these help try drinking some water or tea slowly and see if it helps.

Lavender oil! Lavender is a natural healer. It is also a relaxant and helps to calm. Peppermint oil ( as mentioned in the previous comment) can actually cause nausea and therefore would make a migraine worse.

I use peppermint oil.  I have used wintergreen before as well.  Both work wonders on my migraines.  A word of caution though–peppermint can slow your heart rate, so do not use this if you are on a heart medication or have this blood.  If you don’t have a reason to worry about the side-effects, rub a bit of peppermint oil at your temples, across your forehead, and back of the neck.  It’s refreshing, and a pain killer.  In a matter of minutes you should experience relief.
