What event in American history directly affected the settling of Australia?
For many years, Britain had sent convicts to the American colonies. Following the American war of Independence, the American colonies were no longer viable, as tAmerica was now in a position to refuse to accept any convicts. An alternative had to be found. Captain Cook’s recommendation of the eastern coast of New South Wales was followed up: it is quite possible that, had the need not been there, the British would not have settled the Australian continent.
