There were several plans to build theme parks in the Ewa area in the 1980s. E. Kane Fernandez planned to break ground for an amusement park called Caneland at Campbell Industrial Park in 1977, to be completed by 1979. The park’s theme was to be Hawaii’s plantation heritage. But when another developer entered the scene wanting to build an amusement park at Kahe Point, the Waianae community strongly opposed that fun park. While the Kahe Point project was embroiled in a long court battle, Fernandez didn’t want to be in the same vicinity and decided to move his proposed park to the defunct Kahuku Sugar Mill. He couldn’t secure building permits, however, and the proposal died. Another proposed theme park was in the news in 1987. This park was proposed by Amfac Hawaii Inc. and was supposed to be a cultural theme park in the vacant area between Makakilo and Campbell Industrial Park.
