An Independent Medical Examination (IME), or Insurers Examination, is an impartial medical assessment of an individual, performed at the request of that individual's lawyer or Insurer. The examination should be completed by a specialist of the appropriate discipline. For example, "mechanical" injuries should be reviewed by an orthopaedic surgeon specifically trained in the diagnosis and treatment of bony or muscular injuries qualified to comment upon likely causation, extent and duration of the injury sustained.
