What exactly is astigmatism?

0

(from Dr. Marci Wolfe) Astigmatism means that there is an irregularity to the shape of the eye, usually involving the cornea or front surface of the eye. It is generally related to how your eye grew. Once the eye is done growing, at around age 16 for girls and age 19 for boys, the astigmatism is set and doesn’t change much after that. It is easily correctable with a pair of glasses. You can also correct it with a specialty pair of contact lenses. Some people have both myopia (near-sightedness) and astigmatism and therefore have two focuses. Having a pair of glasses that corrects for both of these conditions brings the focus into one.
