What exactly is geophysics?
Geophysics combines the fields of geology and physics. Geology is the science pertaining to the history and dynamic development of the earth from the study of rocks and soil, and their physical properties. Physics is the study of the physical properties of matter and energy. Therefore, geophysics is the study of the properties of matter and energy as applied to the earth and earth materials. Geophysics allows for non-intrusive subsurface exploration. Geophysics is divided into two primary areas of interest, theoretical geophysics and applied geophysics. Theoretical geophysics is the study of the physical properties that define the physical earth. Applied geophysics is the application of physical principals and methods in exploration for economic deposits, engineering properties and the delineation of mankinds history.
