What exactly is the difference between a stave shell and ply shell?
Ply shells are made by gluing thin sheets of wood together in layers, like plywood. Stave shells are made by gluing solid pieces of wood into a circle like a barrel and shaping them into a cylinder on a lathe. As a result, the wood in a stave shell is in a much more natural state; not bent or smothered in glue.
