What exactly is the ecliptic plane?
The ecliptic is the path the Sun appears to take around the (imaginary) celestial sphere every year. The ecliptic plane is the two-dimensional plane in which the Earth orbits the Sun (most of the other planets orbit in this same plane, too). The ecliptic can be thought of as the intersection of the ecliptic plane with the celestial sphere.
