I suggest White Cloud Mountain Minnows. They are fabulous in an aquarium, so here are some facts about them: Scientific name: Tanichthys albonubes Pronounced: Tan-ick-thiss al-bo-new-bees. Origin: Northeast Asia, south China. Size: 4cm (13/4″) or less. Aquarium: 45 x 30 x 30cm (18″ x 12″ x 12″). Well-filtered, with plenty of aeration and water movement. Water parameters: OK in most unadjusted, dechlorinated tapwater. Can tolerate water as cold as 5C. Diet: Flakes, frozen Daphnia and Brine shrimp. Sexing: Males are slimmer and more brightly-coloured than females. Breeding: Easy. Use spawning mops and marbles as a substrate. Fill the tank to a depth of around 8cm (3″) and then top up with chilled water. Fry hatch after 3-4 days and can be fed on liquid food. Alternatives: Medaka or Ricefish Oryzias latipes grow to a similar size and are interesting to keep and breed. Unfortunately, they are currently a little hard to get hold of. There is also a second species of Tanichthys, T. micagemma
