What fuel will airplanes run on once fossil based fuels are exhausted?
Jet fuel. Nothing says that liquid hydrocarbons have to be refined from fossil reserves, that’s just the least expensive way of getting some. Entire countries have run on synthetic fuels during times when they were politically barred from the world oil markets, both WWII Germany and South Africa did this with coal gasification and Fischer Tropsch synthesis. This technology can also work with the gasification of trash, dried sewage and other biomass sources instead of the less expensive coal and natural gas that’s often used. The Department of Defense has contracted for portable (trailerable) gasification and fischer tropsch equipment in order to turn trash into jet fuel at military field camps. The US airforce has Fischer Tropsch synthesis of jet fuel as the strategic plan for when access to foreign crude has been interrupted and maintains facilities for this as well as continued research. The gasification of biomass and subsequent Fischer tropsch synthesis of synthetic fuels can actua
