What goes into a bullet proof vest?
The term bullet proof is somewhat of a misnomer. Wearing a bullet proof vest does not make you invulnerable to bullets, but the vest can make you resistant to small arms fire, and even some rifle fire. The basic vest is layers of woven Kevlar fibers which act as nets to absorb and impede a bullet’s progress. The layers also spread the aerodynamic shape of a bullet out to something flat and oblong. In some vests, metal plating is inserted into the fabric to prevent higher caliber rifle rounds from penetrating the vest.
