Standard US weapon was the M1 Garand. It’s a semi automatic rifle. Also widely used by the US at the start of the war was the M1903 Springfield bolt action rifle. Later is was used as a sniper rifle. The US also used the M1 Thompson and M3 “Grease gun” sub machine guns. The M1 Carbine was issued to gun and tank crews as a self defense weapon, but it was never really popular with the troops. The US also had .30 caliber heavy and medium machine guns. They never really did develop a proper light machine gun during the war, but the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) filled that role to a certain extent. The German’s standard weapon was the Kar98 bolt action rifle. The did later introduce the Gewehr43, a semi automatic. But they never did have enough of them to completely replace the Kar98. Late in the war they developed the Stg44, which is widely considered the first successful assault rifle. There were others before it, but it was the first one to be used in significant numbers.
