The Chinese Communists finally drove the Koumintang into Taiwan in 1949. Chairman Mao immediately set about making a cult of himself. One of his first acts was the Great Leap Forward, which was a very ambitious project to turn China from a land of farmers to an industrial powerhouse in the blink of an eye. Millions of Chinese peasants were urged to turn in all the metal they possessed so the army could make tanks. The result was that people lost all their pots and pans and kitchen utensils. Worse, the Communist Party knew that the country had to grow much more rice to support itself, so they ordered the clearing of forests from hillsides and mountainsides to plant rice. The result was enormous soil erosion and a huge famine that killed at least 20 million Chinese. The Communist Party has botched everything it has touched. Its campaign to limit couples to one child meant that every child born outside this policy had no official status – no birth records, no citizenship, no legal protect
