What happened to Confederate President Jefferson Davis?
Davis was captured by Federal troops on May 10th in Irwinville, Georgia. He was held prisoner at Fort Monroe in Virginia for approximately two years while the U.S. government tried to build a case to try him for treason. He was ultimately released without a trial. Many scholars feel that the U.S. government was concerned that if they tried Davis for treason it would lead to a case on the constitutionality of secession.
