What happened to Fords 7.3 litre powerstroke diesel engine ?

The 7.3L engine was discontinued due to the engine’s inability to meet FMVSS increasingly stringent emissions standards. The cost to bring that engine into compliance would’ve outweighed the cost of designing a new engine altogether, at least that was the thinking at the time. As a result, the 6.0L was intriduced after first 1/3rd of the 2003 model year for F-series trucks. The E-series followed suit beginning in the 2004 model year. Hope this helps. EDIT: For the record, EVERY Ford light duty truck equipped with a diesel engine, beginning in 1983 up to and including present model years, has been produced by Navistar International. This includes the 6.9L, 7.3L IDI, 7.3L DIT Powerstroke, 6.0L DIT Powerstroke, and the present 6.4L DIT two-stage turbo Powerstroke. In other words, these are NOT Ford engines. Ford only USES them. Look for a 4.4L diesel engine option forthcoming for the 2009 model year F-150s. This engine is a larger displacement version of one of Land Rover’s V8 engines.
