What happened to the drop-down menus (horizontal sub-menus) beneath the main menu tabs?
After extensive user-testing of the former IEEE Main site, it was determined that the primary navigation drop-down menus (which displayed horizontally upon hovering over any tab) presented accessibility issues for many visitors and were a common source of frustration. This finding is consistent with industry research and a corresponding move by many Web sites away from drop-down and fly-out menus in favor of larger mega-menus or no menu at all. Preliminary testing of the new site suggested that the menus were not missed by site visitors, however, IEEE will continue to monitor site usage and feedback to validate this finding.
