During the 1800s, slavery was used mainly in the South in the United States. Most northern states had already abolished slavery and in 1808, the United States withdrew from the international slave trade. The South can be divided into two parts geographically: the Upper South and the Lower South. The Upper South consists of southern states bordering the North such as Virginia or the Western frontier such as Kentucky. The Lower South included the more heavy-use-of -slave states such as Georgia. Obviously, slaves escaping from the Lower South to the North had little chance of success because of the huge gap of land between the two destinations, in which is why most slaves who tried to escape came from the Upper South. When a slave escapes, their master usually organizes a search party of men and dogs and/or posts up a notice a bounty for the return of the slave.
