What happened to those louts who drowned Kilo, the much-loved HMS Belfast ships cat?
Well, on Friday we got our answer, as you may have seen in the paper. The girl of 16 who chucked Kilo into the Thames in London after a drunken night out smirked as Judge Sue Green let her off with a supervision order. She must also write a personal letter of apology to the crew of HMS Belfast. And that’s about it. The judge ticked her off but said she did not think a more serious sentence, such as custody, was necessary. That attitude – implying that it was just a cat so it doesn’t matter – is part of the reason we end up with infants like Baby P being tortured to death in our so-called civilised society. A civilised society should not shrug its shoulders at animal cruelty. Otherwise it takes a step away from civilisation and another step towards the barbarity that happened in Haringey. And if judges will not draw the line, who will? I am not saying that the girl who killed Kilo will end up badly. I fervently hope she won’t, although she didn’t show much regret with her rude and cocky
