What happens if I take a leave from social work practice? Do I still have to complete 40 hours of continuing competence activities?

If a social worker is registered as “inactive in social work” he or she must complete 20 hours of professional development per year. There is no minimum in Category A required in this case. If a social worker does not maintain registration status while absent from practice, he or she would be asked to provide evidence of having completed 20 hours of activity per year for each year of absence, or to take a refresher course as designated by the ACSW. In a situation where a social worker has less than 500 practice hours in the preceding three years, the refresher course or some other means of demonstrating current competence may be a requirement regardless of registration status.
