What happens if neither candidate reaches 270 electoral votes but they do not tie?

0

If no candidate receives a majority of the electoral votes (currently 270 out of 538) then the election is thrown to Congress to decide. It makes no difference if there is a two way tie of 269-269 or if there is a three way split of 269-250-19. And the person leading in electoral votes gets no special advantage either. In 1824, there was a four way electoral vote split with no majority won and the House ended up picking the person in second place for president.
