What happens if Whitingham or Wilmington decides to end the middle school/high school joint contract?
If both towns separately educated their high school and middle school students the likely affect would be an increase in per pupil costs and a reduction in curriculum options. In addition, as per pupil costs increase, there is likely to be an increased cost from excess spending penalties placed on us by the State of Vermont. If either of the two towns decided to end the collaboration and tuition out their high school students, the remaining town may be forced to consider tuitioning their students as well. As the size of the student body decreased, the per pupil cost would go up and it may become too expensive for the remaining school to provide a high school education. At the present time it is not clear what capacity is available at surrounding high schools nor is it clear if closing the high school program will yield any savings in the cost of educating our children.
