What happens in family therapy?
How the therapy is manageddepends on the experience and theoretical orientation of the therapist. My emphasis in family therapy is on facilitating an open dialogue about family issues, listening to each other without judging, validating the feelings of the other, and encouraging reflection on the problem by inspecting it piece by piece in order to understand what everyone is experiencing and why. As my approach is psychodynamic, at times I emphasize the history behind a problem as significant to how it appears in the present, especially the influence of trauma on our relationship patterns and how these patterns tend to repeat themselves. These patterns can continue unless they are inspected and understood more deeply. Is family therapy enough? Family therapy may or may not be enough to resolve a problem in the family.
