What has Sega done or can do about the CD-ROM booter code?

Not much, actually. Oh, they can protect against it, but it’s kinda like closing the barn door after the horses have already bolted. There’s all kinds of stories floating around about how it got there, who put it there and why, and whether or not they’re coding against it now. I wish I could tell you the whole sordid story about the booter code, but I can’t. I’ve been warned, so I’m not talking. All you need to know is that Sega can close the door on the booter code any time they want, forcing the pirates to actually “crack” such titles and thus cementing their already illegal status under copyright law. They can do it via software now, but a final firmware solution is supposedly not far away. ================================================================= ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS | ================================================================= I would like to thank all of the folks who helped out in the development this FAQ.
