What has the governments involvement been in developing a malaria vaccine?
“We’ve been working to support the Medical Research Council which is developing a vaccine. There have been a number of trials recently that have been very positive, but we’re still some away developing a vaccine. “We’re also doing other things: one is working in a number of countries to support the making available of insecticide treated bed nets, which are a really effective way of preventing children and others from getting malaria. “And we’re also supporting the use of artemisinin-based combination therapy, because some of the traditional malaria drugs have become less effective as the disease evolves and becomes resistant. “Finally, we give support to the Global Fund which fights Aids, TB and malaria.
