What if two people are buying or leasing a vehicle, but only one is a Status Indian?

This situation often arises because the transaction involves financing or credit and the Status Indian has to have a co-signor (usually his or her spouse) sign the contract along with them and take registration of the vehicle in both names. In such a case, the purchase is still GST exempt, but 50% of the PST needs to be collected and remitted, if all the other steps for PST exemption have been followed. Where a non-Status person signs as a co-signor for a Status Indian purchaser, but the co-signor is not shown on the bill of sale as a purchaser and is not shown on the registration of the vehicle, the Status Indian purchaser will be fully exempt from PST, if all the other required steps have been followed.
