Backless benches are simple seating options that provide a place to sit without the presence of a backrest as part of the construction. Benches of this type are often utilized in outdoor settings. However, a backless bench may also be used within the home or a public building with equal ease. One of the more common examples of the backless bench is the simple picnic bench. Picnic benches may be simple stand-alone benches that are placed along the long sides of a picnic table, or a bench that is permanently attached to the table itself. A traditional picnic bench is constructed using wood and is usually stained to match the look of the picnic table. However, many contemporary benches are constructed using metal instead of wood. A backless bench, quite simply, is one without a backrest. Backless benches sometimes have arms or other embellishments on the side, but no backs. It is one of the simplest types of seating options available for the outdoors, and it also is popular for dining room furniture and accent pieces indoors also.

A backless bench can be placed anywhere extra seating is needed outdoors—on a patio or deck, in the middle of a garden, or circling a tree’s trunk. There are lots of different types of backless benches, constructed of various materials.

Casual deck boxes made of sturdy PVC add extra storage as well as casual seating, with or without cushions. Basic flat benches can be made in short to extra-long lengths out of superior woods like teak and red cedar, or out of plastic resin materials or polywood products for extra durability.

More formal and elegant pieces are often made using cast iron and look-alike aluminum in intricate patterns, often with vintage look floral fabric cushions. Teak storage chests with cushioned tops offer more traditional looks for a formal patio or deck container that also serves as seating when necessary.

Often, cedar and eucalyptus are used for picnic tables and their accompanying backless benches, as well as planter benches which include attached garden planters at both ends. These forms of wood are naturally weather-resistant and also resistant to boring insects like termites.

Backless concrete stone construction benches are frequently used for memorial benches since it is so easy to etch names and other words, as well as photos and other designs into them.

Backless benches made into a circular configuration offer shady seating space underneath a favorite tree. These are typically made of wood, but there are some wrought iron and resin versions available as well.
